1974
 

The Commonwealth heads of states meeting in Ottawa endorsed the Commonwealth Youth Services Awards (CYSA) scheme.

To participate in the CYSA scheme, the Singapore cabinet established a National Youth Service Awards (NYSA) scheme with five categories – Community Development / Youth Services, Science and Technology, Art and Culture, Sports and any other field of human endeavour; and Deeds of Bravery.
 
1976
 

The inaugural NYSA Presentation Ceremony was held in Istana and winners included the Rotary Club of Singapore, Kim Seng Constituency Youth Group, and People’s Association Adventure Club.

 
1983
  Deeds of Bravery was removed as acts of bravery tend to be impulsive actions rather than a product of sustained commitment  
1999
  The NYSA was renamed as Singapore Youth Awards (SYA) and a new category (“Entrepreneurship”)  was introduced  
2004
  Launch of the SYA Medal of Commendation in conjunction with SYA’s 30th Anniversary  
2005
  Launch of SYA’s inspirational book, "Different"
