The Commonwealth heads of states meeting in Ottawa endorsed the Commonwealth Youth Services Awards (CYSA) scheme.
To participate in the CYSA scheme, the Singapore Cabinet established a National Youth Service Awards (NYSA) scheme with five categories – Community Development / Youth Services, Science and Technology, Art and Culture, Sports and any other field of human endeavour; and Deeds of Bravery. |
The inaugural NYSA Presentation Ceremony was held in the Istana and winners included the Rotary Club of Singapore, Kim Seng Constituency Youth Group, and People’s Association Adventure Club. |
Deeds of Bravery was removed as acts of bravery tend to be impulsive actions rather than a product of sustained commitment. |
The NYSA was renamed as Singapore Youth Award (SYA) and a new category, Entrepreneurship, was introduced. |

Launch of the SYA Medal of Commendation in conjunction with the Award’s 30th Anniversary. |
